Location : Hunder, Nubra valley
Area : 2.5 Acres
Status : Work in Progress
In the white desert of Leh lies Nubra valley where the winter temperatures force the locals to migrate seasonally to warmer regions. Isolated due to its geography and climate, Nubra valley provides a unique opportunity for escapism from the bustle of the city.
The Nubra valley resort is designed to provide a relaxing retreat with its single unit blocks spaced for privacy and isolation. Each unit enjoys a front garden Xeriscaped as per the regional style. A two-storey duplex luxury unit is designed to serve as independent rooms or a single villa for larger groups. The reception and restaurant are zoned in the public sphere with direct access from the main road while the rooms are placed at the deeper end with the front gardens as a semi private buffer.
Situated in a context with such a unique aesthetic - local material and roofing techniques will be used to create a regional experience. The colour palate adheres to the tones provided by locally acquired stone, highlighted with the bright red characteristic to Tibetan culture. Tallu roofs, a traditional technique of bamboo roofing, are a painted red to enrich the space and create contrast to the exposed structure of mud plastered mud blocks.
From a barren site that simply had three single units placed in a row, this project has been developed to add to the existing while optimizing space usage in terms of zoning and circulation that often poses as a challenge in a linear site.
