Placed in its more local parts, Jayaraj complex caters to the native Agrarian population of Kodaikanal.
Jayaraj complex is a 1,050 sqft mixed use commercial space with its ground floor dedicated to its chief function as an Agriculture showroom. The addition of a health care clinic was proposed consciously considering the context where health care centers are few and far in between. These functions reflect in the massing of the building which is essentially a union of two distinct forms, a cuboid nested into the larger mass of an iconic house shape.
The house icon was chosen for its sloped roof and the added internal height that came with the form. The clear glass frontage gives a full view of the showroom, acts as a live display showcasing all their products at a glance. The interiors have been minimally furnished and finished to give the space a larger feel. Solid wood from local fallen trees has been used to reduce material usage. Undressed stone slabs, used as stepping treads at the entry level and seating in the healthcare waiting area, combined with the rich natural tones of the wood, create warm interiors that are unique to the context.
